Patient safety in cosmetic procedures – how to protect yourself

A cosmetic procedure is a big decision – so you need full information and peace of mind before you decide. Stricter legal requirements give you better protection today, but you still need to choose a safe clinic and a qualified practitioner yourself.

What does the law say about patient safety in aesthetic treatments?

Since 1 July 2021, new requirements apply to aesthetic procedures. Previously there were no clear requirements on the practitioner’s competence, which increased the risks for the patient.

  • Injection treatments: a licensed physician, dentist or nurse.
  • Surgical procedures: a licensed physician or dentist with specialist competence.
Your rights as a patient

You are entitled to at least two days’ cooling-off period before you consent to an injection treatment. Consent should be given in writing.

Cooling-off period and informed consent

The cooling-off period gives you time to weigh the pros and cons and avoid impulsive decisions. Written consent means that both you and the practitioner agree on what will be done.

How do you choose a safe clinic?

A reputable clinic has licensed staff and follows statutory guidelines. Before the treatment you can:

  • Ask to see the practitioner’s licence
  • Check that the clinic has a medically responsible physician
  • Verify the licence in the National Board of Health and Welfare register

What applies to medical records and personal data?

Treatments under the aesthetic procedures act must be recorded – the practitioner has a legal obligation to document them. Since aesthetic procedures count as voluntary care, separate consent is required for your personal data to be processed.

What can happen if you choose an unlicensed practitioner?

Despite the legal changes, some clinics offer treatments without the right competence. This can lead to serious complications such as infections, nerve damage and uneven results – in the worst case tissue death or blindness. So choose a qualified practitioner rather than the lowest price.
